Revised Artist Statement

This body of work is my investigation into the idea of a wall and its relationship to interior and exterior space. A wall is defined as a structure to separate or protect an area. I find it interesting that something that is meant to protect an area must also separate it. In essence a wall protects by isolating. In investigating this concept I use materials that are both strong but also able to be manipulated, such as foam core, illustration board, tyvek, and Asian papers. My structures allow the viewer to alter the position of the piece, which also alters the imagery seen. The structures themselves are covered in prints, one side linear, and one side organic or a mixture of both. The linear and organic forms create a tension within the wall structure that mimics the tension between being protected by a wall or being isolated by a wall.

  1. I remember in crit that some of the comments about the wall seemed to link to the scale of everything. I remember someone saying that they didn't picture them as walls, because they picture walls as large surfaces. I wonder if there is anything you can do to create a sense of scale?
